FRIENDS OF DOROTHY

Damien felt a little bit guilty about what he’d been up to behind Andrew’s back. But as Andrew was sleeping with Jane he figured what he’d done with the black guy sort of evened up the score. Band practice that Sunday was pretty subdued. Andrew had been out clubbing the night before with Jane and had a really bad hangover. Damien did his best to make him feel better and offered a shoulder massage to help ease the thumping headache he said he had but he refused and backed away when Damien tried to touch him. Half an hour after arriving, Andrew decided it was probably best if he left so he did.

Walking down the street to the bus stop, Brian Edwards pulled up in a purple mini and rolled down the window.

“Need a ride?” he asked. Damien thought of his knight in shining armour scenario he’d imagined when he was younger and though Brian was as far removed from that image as he possibly could be, he could really do with some company.

“Don’t worry,” Brian said, trying to put his mind at ease, “Nobody that we know goes there.”

The bar was called The Little Apple, all New York themed inside with framed posters of the Manhattan skyline, it had a circular bar in the middle of the room and at the back was a small stage, which had a billboard announcing that Victoria Sphincter & Her Latin Boys would be on stage at 4pm.

“They’re fantastic,” Brian lisped, “Want a drink?”

Damien decided to fore-go alcohol and asked for a coke. An hour after they arrived, the bar started to fill up and Brian seemed to know everyone, or at least they knew him. He introduced Damien to a few of his “Friends,” who were mostly older, very camp guys. But they seemed nice enough and were quite funny. And they kept referring to Damien as the cutie or the hottie which made him smile. One of them offered
